What “custom” actually means

Custom, bespoke, and made-to-measure are used interchangeably but they are not the same thing. Understanding the difference helps you ask better questions and get a better suit.

  • Off-the-rack: A suit built to standard sizes, altered slightly to fit. Fast and cheap. The shoulder width, chest, and seat are fixed by the size you pick — alterations can only do so much.
  • Made-to-measure: A standard pattern adjusted to your measurements. Better fit than off-the-rack, but still working from a template.
  • Custom (bespoke): The pattern is drafted from your measurements alone. Every seam, panel, and proportion is built for your body specifically. This is what Keck does. It takes more time and more fittings — and the result looks different because it is different.

When Lucky says custom, he means a pattern built from scratch, measurements taken across 20+ points, and a fitting process that does not end until the suit looks right on your body — not on a standard template.

Custom suits in Chiang Mai should solve a real problem

If you need a suit in Chiang Mai, you probably need it for a reason: a meeting, a wedding, a trip, a party, or a better daily wardrobe. The suit should fit your body, fit the weather, and fit the time you have. That is the job.

Keck Custom Tailor is run by Lucky, who has more than 20 years of experience making custom clothing in the Chiang Mai Old City. The process is direct: you walk in, Lucky talks through the garment with you, you choose your fabric, you get measured, and the suit is built around your body and your schedule.

What a good custom suit should give you

  • A clean shoulder line — the single most important sign of whether a suit fits
  • A jacket that sits flat at the back and does not ride up when you move
  • Fabric that feels right in Chiang Mai heat and still looks sharp in a meeting room
  • Trousers with the right break length for your shoes and your build
  • A style that works for the occasion you are buying it for — and as many after that as possible
  • Room in the fitting process to make changes before the final pickup — not a take-it-or-leave-it delivery

Pricing: what a custom suit costs at Keck

Custom full suits at Keck range from 6,500 to 10,500 THB (roughly $180–$290 USD). Every full suit includes one free tie. Dress shirts range from 1,300 to 2,000 THB.

Where you land in that range depends on the fabric you choose. Entry-level is a good quality tropical wool or wool blend — solid, practical, wears well. At the top of the range you are looking at finer Italian wools, wool-silk blends, or premium imports with better drape and hand-feel. Lucky will show you options at different price points before you commit to anything.

There are no hidden costs. The price quoted includes the pattern, all fittings, and adjustments until the suit is right. If something is not sitting correctly after the first fitting, it gets fixed — that is part of what you are paying for.

Fabric: what works in Chiang Mai

  • Tropical wool (200–240g): The most practical choice for the climate. Breathes well, holds structure through a long day, travels reasonably. Good for business, weddings, and events.
  • Wool-silk blend: Lighter feel, subtle natural sheen, slightly better drape. A step up in look and feel. Good for formal events and weddings where presentation matters most.
  • Linen: The coolest option available. Creases easily — accept that going in. Best for relaxed formal occasions and daytime events where texture is appropriate.
  • Cotton: Casual and comfortable. Good for shirts and trousers. Less common as a full suit fabric unless the occasion is specifically informal.

If you are unsure, ask about the gram weight. A 200g wool feels completely different from a 320g wool in 32°C heat. Lucky will ask where you are wearing the suit and what comes after Chiang Mai — the fabric choice changes depending on the answer.

The process: what happens at Keck

  • Consultation (15–20 min): Lucky asks what you need the suit for, where you will wear it, and when you need it. This conversation sets the fabric choice, the cut, and the fitting schedule.
  • Fabric selection (10–15 min): You see and feel actual cloth at your price range. Lucky advises on what works best for your occasion and the current season.
  • Measurements (15–20 min): 20+ measurement points across the shoulders, chest, waist, seat, arms, and legs. Posture, shoulder slope, and how you carry yourself are all factored in — not just the tape measure numbers.
  • First fitting: The suit is built and you try it on. Shoulder line, chest fit, sleeve length, trouser break, and waist suppression are all checked and marked for adjustment.
  • Final fitting and pickup: Adjustments made, suit ready to collect — or delivered to your hotel if you are checking out.

Why fast does not have to mean sloppy

Some travelers think they must choose between speed and quality. That is not true. A shop that knows its craft can move quickly and still give proper measurements, honest fabric advice, and a final check before delivery.

Standard turnaround at Keck is 24–48 hours, with rush service available when needed. That is enough time to do the job properly — consultation, measurements, first fitting with adjustments, and final pickup — if you come in on day one of your visit.

“Lucky even came by my hotel for the final fitting, as I was leaving Chiang Mai on the day of pickup.”

— David Cheng

“Delivered it personally so that I was able to check out of my hotel in time.”

— Stevie-Ray van Steel

What to bring to your first visit

  • Your shoes — trouser length is set based on your actual footwear
  • Your travel deadline — Lucky plans the fitting schedule around your departure
  • A reference photo if you have a style in mind — cut, lapel, colour, anything specific
  • A dress shirt if you own one — helps get collar gap and sleeve length right from the start
  • Your budget range — say it at the start and Lucky will work within it, not try to push you above it

The Flawless Fit Guarantee

Keck stands behind every suit it makes. If the fit is not right at final pickup, it gets fixed before you leave. Multiple fittings are included — not charged as extras. The goal is a suit that looks correct on your body, not a suit that is handed over and closed out.
